If
you have been injured, undergone surgery or some
type of immobilization, aquatic pt may offer an
excellent adjunctive component to your rehabilitation.
Aquatic physical therapy can help facilitate your
improvement by a reduction of gravitational forces
and the utilization of buoyancy and hydrostatic
pressure.
Weight
bearing can often be initiated quickly in the pool
due to a decrease of force on the weight bearing
joints. Water also allows for an infinite number
of movements that are often not possible on land.
Weak muscles can be assisted by buoyancy and high-speed
movement can increase edema, lymphadema and improve
circulation. Warm water is also quite relaxing and
in some instances can help reduce muscle spasm and
spasticity. Using warm water, therapists employ
such diverse techniques as Bad Ragaz Ring Method,
Halliwick Method and WATSU (water shiatsu). Be sure
to ask your physician about aquatic physical therapy
at Therapy Plus.
